Mississippi National River and Recreation Area

Native Americans utilized the Mississippi River for trade, food and water supply long before Europeans visited the “New World.” Its watersheds have shaped the continent and its cultures, and today the “Father of Waters” is still just as powerful as it once was. Millions of people get their drinking water from the watershed, and also use it as a playground, a shipping lane, and a political boundary. Millions of plants, animals and other living things thrive in the river’s ecosystem. Visit the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and see the power for yourself.

Pipestone National Monument

The first National Park Service area established within the boundaries of Minnesota, Pipestone National Monument possesses a valuable spiritual resource to many American Indians. The pipestone quarries are a sacred site for many American Indians attracting tribes across North American to quarry red pipestone for making pipes and effigies from the easily carveable material.

Voyageurs National Park
Voyageurs is a water-based park where you must take to the water to fully experience the lakes, islands and shorelines of the park. Nearly 200 years ago voyageurs paddled birch bark canoes full of animal pelts and trade goods through this area on their way to Lake Athabaska, Canada. Today, people explore the park by houseboat, motorboat, canoe and kayak.
