Ellis Island
Opened on January 1, 1892, Ellis Island became the nation's premier federal immigration station. The station processed over 12 million immigrant steamship passengers tracing the ancestry of over 40% of America's population.
Governors Island National Monument
The military communities on Governors Island were woven into the intricate social, political and economic tapestry that is New York City for more than two centuries. Governors Island stood as a silent sentinel in New York Harbor from 1776-1996 and provided protection for the ideals represented by the Statue of Liberty across the Bay. From colonial outpost to regional administrative center for the U.S. Army and Coast Guard, Governers Island is rich with American history.
Statue of Liberty National Monument
A universal symbol of freedom and democracy, the Statue of Liberty also celebrates the international friendship of the United States and France. Built in commeration of an alliance during the American Revolution, the Statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and designated as a National Monument in 1924.
